Getting Connected
Communicating with a system requires in most cases two classes: a Device class and a Connection class. The Device class contains all parameters and functions of a device (e.g. a laser controller), the Connection class handles the data transfer between the Device class and the hardware.

Note
The SDK contains a generic device class for every laser that can be controlled by a DLC pro. For more complex systems that combine different types of hardware (e.g. lasers, frequency combs, cesium clocks, wavelength meters, etc.) a specialized device class is shipped on the USB stick containing the control software and documentation.
Network Connections
A NetworkConnection
can be used for all devices supporting Ethernet or for software that acts as a server. For most devices two connections on different TCP ports are maintained internally: a general connection which handles reading/writing parameters (the command line) and a second connection which allows subscribing to parameter changes (the monitoring line).
Required parameter
- host: str
A system label or serial number (e.g. iCHROME-MLE-30631), an IP address (e.g. 192.168.178.32) or a DNS hostname (dfc_core.example.com).
When using a serial number or system label a UDP broadcast is sent to the network to find the device. This will only work when the computer running the Python code and the device share the same network segment / VLAN or when UDP broadcasts are forwarded across network segments. IP addresses or DNS hostnames, however, will always work as long as there is a route in the network.
Optional parameter
- command_line_port: int = 1998
The TCP port of the command line connection (default is 1998).
- monitoring_line_port: int = 1999
The TCP port of the monitoring line connection (default is 1999).
- timeout: int = 5
The timeout for each operation in seconds (default is 5s).
Note
Most devices use as default TCP port 1998 for the command line connection and TCP port 1999 for the monitoring line connection. It’s therefore sufficient to use the default values of these parameters.
The exception are multi-laser engines from the iChrome family. They don’t have a monitoring line and use as default TCP port 50000 for the command line connection. It’s therefore necessary to either set command_line_port=50000 and monitoring_line_port=0 or use the system label or serial number of the device, as this will use the correct ports from the response of the device.

Serial Connection
A SerialConnection
class can be used for all devices supporting RS-232 or USB (which in turn will create a virtual RS-232 port). Serial connections only support a single command line but no monitoring line (i.e. it’s not possible to subscribe to parameter changes).
Required parameter
- Port: str
The name of the serial port (e.g. COM1 or /dev/ttyS0).
Optional parameter
- Baudrate: int = 115200
The number of transferred bits per second (default is 115200).
- Timeout: int = 5
The timeout for each operation in seconds (default is 5s).
Note
All devices supported by this library use a default baud rate of 115200 with eight data bits, no parity bit and one stop bit (8-N-1). Therefore it’s sufficient to only provide a port unless the baud rate of the device has been changed manually.
